主イエスを本当に知るにはどうしたらいいのでしょうか。それには人生のあらゆる領域で一生懸命に生きること、逃げ出したくなるような厳しい労苦をも厭わないことが求められます。キリストを知るのに魔法は使えません。近道もありません。クリスチャンは主がこれをせよと命じられたことを、主に信頼して、自分の存在を賭けて体当たりして取り組まなければなりません。もちろん神が助けてくださいます。しかし私たちの側で責任を持ってなすべきことまで神が代わってくださるわけではありません。私たちは暇をもてあます特権を与えられたのではないのです。むしろ勤労は私たちの責務であり神よりの召命ですから、勤労の喜びを修得するべきです。そのために社会には人が働くことができる構造が組み込まれています。社会で働くことは神の御心なのですから、ことさら重荷に感じる必要はありません。私たちには恵みとして、主が成し遂げてくださるという平安が保証されているのですから。
What does it take to really know Jesus? It takes hard work in every area of life, and strenuous labor is what we shy away from. There is no magic in knowing Christ, and there is no shortcut. Believers must roll up their spiritual sleeves and tackle the task he has assigned them to do. We certainly have divine help, but God will never do for us what it is our responsibility to do. We do not have the privilege of leisure; rather, work is our responsibility and calling. The joy of work is something that has to be learned, and this is the reason a structure is built into society that enables people to work. The things that are most redemptive in this life, we would never do without pressure.
