あなたは幼子と乳飲み子たちの口によって、力を打ち建てられました。（詩篇八・2／新改訳）
詩篇八篇2節は、聖書全巻の中でもとても印象に残る聖句です。無力きわまりない、徹底的に他者に依存せざるを得ない幼子や乳飲み子たちを取り上げて、その唇から力が生じるというのです。力や自己充足の思想と乳飲み子という、この二つの考え方は、とても大きなコントラストを描いています。にもかかわらず、詩篇記者は言い表すことさえできない幼子や乳飲み子たちの唇によって、神は敵を圧倒し、沈黙させる力を打ち建てられると語っています。
この聖句は神の用いられる手段と私たちの手段が全く違うという事実を劇的に表現しているのです。神の国はこの世とは異なり、私たちがこうなるはずだと考えるようには働かないのです。そしてこのみことばは、肉は何の役にも立たない（ヨハネ六・63）という聖書全体が論じている真理を暗示しています。神による究極的な勝利はこの世が期待するような権力や能力によって得られるものではありません。無力な赤ちゃんが悪の王国を無力化させ、最も力のない者たちのうちに、神の威光や力が現されるのです。
真の信仰者は、この世が威光や力と見なすものが、実はつかの間の見せ物に過ぎないことを見抜いています。弱さというものを乳飲み子よりもさらに適切に、また劇的に表している象徴は十字架の上で死なれた人の子の引き裂かれたみからだです。パウロはこのことを理解して次のように記しました。「神の愚かさは人の知恵よりも賢く、神の弱さは人の力よりも強い」（第一コリント一・25）。
私たちは神によって考え方を新しく造り変えていただき、この世が探し求めるところにではなく、神がご覧になるところに真の力を見いだす者とされる必要があります。
Out of the mouths of babies and nursing infants You have ordained strength. Psalm 8:2 NKJV
The second verse of Psalm 8 is one of the most revolutionary in all of Scripture. It speaks of babies who are both helpless and dependent and says that from their mouths come strength. One could not draw a greater contrast to the idea of power and self-sufficiency than a nursing infant. Yet the psalmist says that it is from the lips of babes and sucklings, who cannot even explain their own needs, that God established the power to overcome his enemies and silence his adversaries.
What a dramatic way to express the fact that God’s ways are not our ways, that his kingdom is not of this world and does not function the way that we think it ought to function! Implicit within this text is the whole argument of Scripture that the flesh profits nothing. It is not by might and power, as the world understands such things, that the ultimate victory will be won. A helpless baby began the undoing of the kingdom of evil, and it was in that very helplessness that the majesty of God was revealed.
What the world considers majesty and power, the true believer finds to be ephemeral show. The only biblical figure that portrays weakness more aptly and dramatically than that of a baby is the broken body of the Son of Man as he dies upon the cross. Paul understood this when he wrote, “The foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength” (1 Cor. 1:25).
We need to allow God to reshape our thinking so that we see strength in the places where he sees it and not where the world sees it.
