主の前にもだし、耐え忍びて主を待ち望め。（詩篇三七・7）
クリスマスの時節が近づいています。キリスト降誕を祝うために私たちの心を整えるべき時です。私たちはせわしなく心騒がせ、準備のできないままでクリスマスを迎えてはなりません。アドベントはスコットランド教会に古くから受け継がれている聖餐式のようであるべきです。聖餐式というクライマックスを迎える前に霊的な調整がなされます。日曜日の聖餐式にあずかりたいと願う人は前もって開かれる週半ばの特別な集いに出席します。だれ一人として、あたふたして神の御前に飛び込むようなことのないように、あらかじめ心を整えるのです。教会は人々が神からの恵みを受ける準備ができた状態で聖餐に臨めるようにと、霊的整えの機会を定めたのでしょう。教会員が日頃この世の生活にどっぷりつかっていることを知っているからです。
クリスマスに向けた数週間は大切な霊的備えの時です。あらゆる諸行事のただ中にあって、神を待ち望むという霊的な飢え渇きを大切にしながら心して神を待ち望みましょう。
私たちは祈ります。「神よ、この時節にあなたは何をお語りになりたいのでしょうか。主のご降誕を祝う全期間を通じて、私の心と思い、そして全存在が、あなたの御霊の働きかけの邪魔となることがないように心を開きます」
アドベントは人生の優先順位がどのようになっているのか格別な注意を払うべき時です。クリスマス・プレゼントを買うこと、家族で共に過ごすこと、教会のクリスマス行事も大切です。しかしクリスチャンにとってこの期間の最優先事項は、私たちと共に住むために天より降って来られたインマヌエルであられるイエス・キリストとの交わりです。

The Christmas season is approaching, and we must prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming. So often we come into his presence hurriedly, anxiously, and unprepared. We would do well to pay attention to the old Scottish Church’s communion service, which regarded spiritual preparation as paramount. The believers who desired to take communion on Sunday were to go to a special midweek service ahead of time so they would not come rushing pell-mell into God’s presence. The leaders instituted this preparation service so people would come to communion ready to receive from God the grace that is needed for life’s circumstances.
The next few weeks should be a time of preparation for us. In the midst of all the Christmas activity, there should be in our lives a dimension of spiritual hunger and thirst, a seeking of God.
Our prayer should be, “God, what do you want to say to me during this season? I want my heart, my mind, and my whole being to be open to your Spirit during your birthday celebration.”
This is the time when we must be extremely careful about the priorities in our lives. There is no question that the gift-buying, the family times, and the church activities are quite important, but these days the primary thing in your life and mine should be our relationship to Immanuel—the One who came to dwell with us.
