聖なる方の怒りを意識した場合に、本来律法を与えられた神に目を留めるはずが、いとも簡単に律法それ自体へと心が逸れていきます。それはちょうどアダムとエバの目が創造者なる神からちっぽけな園の中央の木に目を奪われたのと同じです。アダムとエバはあの果実の中に自分たちの願望を達成する鍵があると考えてしまいました。それと同じようにイスラエルの民も律法を与えた神に代えて、律法それ自体に救いの根拠があるかのように惑わされてしまいます。偶像崇拝に陥ると、自分で刻んだ像を大切にしているうちに、すべてを造られた方を見失いますが、律法主義では自分が義なる者となり、真に義なる方を見失うのです。
律法主義への転落は速やかに起こってしまうものであり、なおかつ見極めることが困難です。私たちは果たして義なる方に対して身をささげているのか、それとも律法に身をささげているのか、どちらでしょう。クリスチャンでさえ聖書を偶像的に扱う者になりかねません。私たちは聖書それ自体というより、聖書が説き明かしている唯一の神を礼拝すべきです。
They knew what offended the Holy One, and they could easily turn their attention away from the Giver of the Law to the Law itself, just as Adam and Eve turned their eyes from the Creator to one tiny aspect of creation. As Adam and Eve thought their fulfillment lay in the fruit, so also many people in Israel came to believe that their salvation lay in the Law instead of in Yahweh, who gave the Law. In idolatry one gains the thing made but loses the Maker. In legalism one becomes self-righteous and loses the righteous One.
The slip into legalism happens quickly and subtly. Are you devoted to the righteous One or to his Law? It is possible for Christians to even become idolaters of Scripture. We are to worship the One whom Scripture reveals to us. To what or to whom are you devoted?
